Bulk Slash: A Mind-Blowing Action Game for Sega Saturn

Developer: CAProduction   Publisher: Hudson Soft   Release: 07/11/97   Genre: Action

The Sega Saturn may not have reached its full potential in the West, but in Japan, it boasts a unique library of impressive games. One such gem is Bulk Slash, a technically brilliant and incredibly fun action game that has quickly become one of my favorite titles for the Saturn.

In Bulk Slash, you find yourself in the near future on the planet Blau, which is recovering from a galactic civil war. Military Chief Alois Gardona stages a coup d’état to restore power to Blau and protect its inhabitants from discrimination. As S.D.F. pilot Chris, it’s your duty to stop their ambitions and prevent the use of a weapon of mass destruction.

For a long time, Bulk Slash remained inaccessible to many players. The game lacked a detailed story, with most of the background information provided near the end, which fell flat. However, the fan translators did an incredible job by not only localizing the text but also recording a fan dub that adds depth to the game. This dedication to making the game more accessible deserves commendation, especially considering it’s unlikely to be re-released.

Bulk Slash is best described as an action game with elements of Virtual On. Your mech can transform between a robot and a jet fighter, providing different gameplay experiences. In robot form, you have a machine gun and can slash enemies at close range. If you charge a meter, you can unleash powerful bombs. Additionally, you have access to three limited ammo weapons: a homing laser, flamethrower, and napalm blaster. In jet mode, you have unlimited flight capabilities and can adjust your speed. Although changing into a jet during indoor missions causes some camera issues, the overall gameplay remains incredible.

Nonlinear and Varied: The Gameplay of Bulk Slash

Bulk Slash offers a variety of missions set in a fully 3D environment, which distinguishes it from other fighting games. Each mission has a unique objective, such as destroying targets, finding key cards, or protecting important assets. Despite some similarities in objectives, the challenges presented in each mission keep the gameplay fresh and engaging. From city landscapes to open space missions and boss battles, Bulk Slash offers a diverse range of experiences that never feel repetitive.

One of the game’s highlights is its nonlinear structure, allowing players to complete the first and second sets of missions in any order. This flexibility adds replay value and allows players to explore different paths. Each mission concludes with an epic boss battle, reminiscent of the thrilling set pieces found in Treasure games. The bosses are grand in scale and require strategic thinking to defeat, making them incredibly satisfying to conquer.

While Bulk Slash isn’t excessively difficult overall, the final mission presents a challenge. Players may struggle to defeat the five consecutive bosses at the end, leading to the use of multiple continues. However, by that point in the game, players should have mastered the mechanics and can quickly progress through the levels. With just seven levels, Bulk Slash strikes the perfect balance, avoiding any potential monotony.

    Unlocking Secrets: The M.I.S.S. System

Beyond its enjoyable gameplay, Bulk Slash features the Manageable Intelligible Support System (M.I.S.S.), adding an extra layer of strategy. The game introduces seven navigators, each assigned to a specific mission. Players can find and recruit these navigators, who offer directions and supposedly provide combat bonuses. However, the effectiveness of these bonuses remains questionable, as no significant differences are noticeable in combat. Nevertheless, the navigators play a crucial role in unlocking unique endings and bonus artwork. To experience all the game has to offer, players are encouraged to play through the game multiple times, each with a different navigator equipped.

Bulk Slash is not only a fantastic technical showcase for the Sega Saturn but also an outstanding action game. Its impressive gameplay mechanics, nonlinear structure, and varied missions make it a must-play title for action game enthusiasts. Although the game may come with a hefty price tag, I strongly urge you to experience it in any way possible if you’re a Saturn owner craving an exhilarating and unforgettable gaming experience.
