Bytedance Debunks Pico Rumors, New Glassholes Emerge as Trend: The XR Weekly Recap (2023.10.24)

It’s been another busy working week, so this newsletter will be shorter than usual. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much significant news in the VR ecosystem this week. But I do have two exciting updates to share:

    • Firstly, in a few days, I will be able to reveal what I’ve been working on for a while now!
    • Secondly, I’m introducing a new section of the newsletter dedicated to sponsored content. While I enjoy featuring “friends and partners” for free, I’m now offering structured collaborations in this sponsored section. Infomediji is the first sponsor, and I’m grateful for their support!

    Pico is NOT shutting down

This week, there was some drama surrounding Pico. A Chinese website reported that Bytedance, frustrated with the slow growth of the VR ecosystem, was planning to cut off its VR hardware division, including Pico. Western social VR accounts, like Cix Liv’s on Twitter, shared this news.

However, I found the news suspect. Pico employees were attending AWE, and leaks had already shown the upcoming Pico 5. Within hours, Bytedance issued a press release stating that the rumors were false, confirming that Pico will continue its business. There is now speculation that Pico will focus more on mixed reality (MR) to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro.

    • Meta is working on decoding images from brain activity through AI.
    • Monster Hunter, a collaboration between Niantic and Capcom, reached 10 million downloads in its first month.
