Cities Skylines 2 Dev Apologizes for Delayed Expansion Pass DLC and Promises to Fix PC Version

Embattled City-Builder Cities Skylines 2 Faces Further Setback with DLC Release Delay

Performance Improvements and Mod Editor Delay Cause Post-Launch Content Delays

City-building game Cities Skylines 2 has encountered another setback, this time with the planned release of downloadable content (DLC). Developer Colossal Order has confirmed that the Expansion Pass post-launch content will be delayed in order to prioritize much-needed performance improvements and the previously delayed Mod Editor.

Originally scheduled for release during the fourth quarter of 2023, the first Asset Pack will now be released in the first quarter of 2024. The Content Creator Packs, initially planned for Q1 2024, have been pushed back to Q2 2024. Additionally, the release of three DLC radio stations has also been delayed. However, the Expansion Bridges and Ports DLC is still on track for a Q2 2024 release.

Focus on Performance and Console Release

In a blog post, Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen expressed apologies for the delays and emphasized that the team’s focus is on improving the PC version before shifting attention to the console release and DLC content. The console version of Cities Skylines 2 is expected to be released in the first half of 2024.

Hallikainen assured fans that the marketed DLC content will be delivered, but not within the originally scheduled timeframe. She explained that the first Asset Pack, Beach Properties, is being worked on by artists and outsourcing partners but will only be implemented once the necessary asset fixes and performance work are completed to the team’s satisfaction. Hallikainen stressed the importance of not rushing new content before ensuring the base game is ready for it, including the Content Creator Packs and Radio stations.

    Previous Delays and Challenges

This announcement follows a significant delay in official mod support and a slowdown in patch releases confirmed by Colossal Order last week. Since its launch on Steam last month, Cities Skylines 2 has faced challenges and received a “mixed” user review rating. The game currently does not have official mod support or the expected in-game editor, hindering mod makers from importing their own assets into the game. The original Cities Skylines game enjoyed strong support from the modding community.

    Turbulent Release and Performance Concerns

Cities Skylines 2 has faced a tumultuous release. Prior to launch, Colossal Order and publisher Paradox announced that the Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 versions of the game would be delayed to spring 2024 to ensure quality and performance across all platforms. The minimum and recommended PC specifications were also raised significantly to accommodate the game’s “next-generation” features and enhance the player experience.

Despite these efforts, Colossal Order and Paradox admitted in a joint statement that they had not achieved the benchmark for launch performance on PC. However, they decided to stick with the planned release date. On launch day, Cities: Skylines 2 exceeded 100,000 concurrent players on Steam and topped the best-sellers chart, but many players expressed frustration over the game’s poor performance and numerous bugs.

    Community Reaction and Controversy

Earlier this month, CEO Mariina Hallikainen addressed the reaction from some within the Cities Skylines community after the developer removed an in-game radio advert that was considered offensive.

    Conclusion

Cities Skylines 2 continues to face obstacles and challenges following its launch. The delay in DLC releases serves as another setback for this embattled city-building game. Colossal Order is working diligently to improve performance and deliver promised content to its players. With a dedicated focus on resolving issues and delivering a satisfying gaming experience, the developer aims to regain the trust and support of the Cities Skylines 2 community.
