Telltale Games Confirms Layoffs Amid Challenging Market Conditions

October 6, 2023: Telltale Games has recently announced a round of layoffs in response to current market conditions. In an Instagram statement, the company expressed its regret over the decision and emphasized its commitment to storytelling and discovering innovative ways to do so. While the layoffs were described as a difficult choice, Telltale Games assured that all ongoing projects remain in production. However, no further updates regarding the situation have been provided at this time.

The Wolf Among Us 2: A Game of Uncertainties

The Wolf Among Us 2, a highly anticipated title, has been a topic of concern for many fans. After its initial cancellation and subsequent revival, Telltale Games faced significant turbulence. The studio had previously shut down in 2018, leaving numerous developers without jobs. However, under new ownership, the company resurfaced a year later, bringing back many former employees to work on upcoming projects. Unfortunately, Jonah Huang, a cinematic artist from the team, disclosed that he and several others were laid off by Telltale Games last month.

“This is a sensitive issue, but I feel compelled to address the gaming industry’s recent wave of layoffs,” Huang stated, referencing similar events like the recent layoffs at Epic Games. He went on to explain that most of the layoffs occurred in early September; however, due to a signed non-disclosure agreement (NDA), he was unable to provide any updates on The Wolf Among Us 2. Huang specified that his intention in sharing this information was not to harm the company or its reputation, but rather to honestly communicate his experience of being laid off.

Speaking about his return to Telltale Games, Huang expressed his eagerness to work on The Wolf Among Us 2, highlighting the competence and excitement within the small development team. However, he emphasized that Telltale Games has yet to publicly address the layoffs or provide any details regarding the situation. Reflecting on his time with the studio, Huang appreciated the opportunity they gave him and maintained that he holds no ill-will towards the company.

Wrapping up his post, Huang mentioned that the layoffs occurred shortly after Telltale Games acquired UK-based studio Flavourworks. Again, he stressed that his intention was not to harm the business but merely to share the facts of his layoff experience. The news of Telltale Games’ layoffs is part of a series of similar incidents sweeping the gaming industry, including those at CD Projekt Red and Riot Games. As developments arise, we will provide updates on the situation.
