Discover the Optimal Graphics Mode for Alan Wake 2

The Release of Alan Wake 2: A Look at Graphics Modes and Reviews

Alan Wake 2 is set to be released on Friday, October 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game’s release was delayed by developer Remedy Entertainment earlier this summer. While PC players have various visual options available to them, PS5 and Xbox Series X players will have only two graphics modes, with Xbox Series S having just one. Before diving into the graphics modes, it is recommended to read Game Informer’s review of Alan Wake 2.

Considering the available graphics modes on consoles, the choice between them will depend on personal preference. It is worth noting that Alan Wake 2 was developed as a 30 frames per second (FPS) experience, focusing on visuals and ambiance. However, a Performance Mode was added to the game as well.

Here is what we have discovered about the two modes:

Quality Mode: This mode offers a 4K output resolution, a render resolution of 2258 x 1270p, and a mostly locked frame rate of 30 FPS with occasional drops.

Performance Mode: This mode prioritizes a 60 FPS frame rate over resolution. The output resolution is 1440p, with a render resolution of 1505 x 847p. While the game maintains its 60 FPS target quite well, it may not be locked at 60 FPS at all times.

Both of these modes are available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, while Xbox Series S has a 1440p output resolution.

Alan Wake 2 also includes live-action video components, which will run at a lower frame rate, possibly around 24 FPS, during these segments.

Here are the graphics modes preferred by some Game Informer staff members:

Alex Van Aken: Alex starts in Performance Mode but switches to Quality Mode for slower-paced games where story and atmosphere are important.

Blake Hester: Blake plays in Quality Mode by default and finds it satisfying.

Charles Harte: Charles plays in Performance Mode on PS5 as he values a higher frame rate over graphical quality.

Kyle Hilliard: Kyle plays in Performance Mode, as he prefers smoother gameplay over improved visuals.

Marcus Stewart: Marcus plays in Quality Mode to fully appreciate the game’s art direction.

Matt Miller: Matt also plays in Quality Mode to experience the peak visuals of the game.

Wesley LeBlanc: Wesley chooses Quality Mode for Alan Wake 2, as he appreciates the game’s cinematic experience.

It is important to note that personal preferences should guide the choice of graphics mode. There is no right or wrong answer, and players should select the mode that suits their preferences for a better gaming experience.

And that’s it for our look at the graphics modes and reviews of Alan Wake 2. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 27. For more information, read Game Informer’s hands-on impressions of the game and check out the full review.
