The Mind-Blowing Alt Controller Games at EGX 2023

    The Leftfield Collection’s Top-Tier Offerings

The Alt Controller showcased at this year’s EGX was nothing short of remarkable. While the Future Of Play booth curated by our very own Graham was a sight to behold, the Leftfield Collection never fails to amaze with its lineup of custom controller games. This year, there were two particular games that stood out, located directly opposite each other in the collection’s captivating corridor. Let’s take a closer look at these innovative creations.

Bib Goes Home: A Delightful Adventure

Bib Goes Home features an adorable character named Bib. This innovative game offers three different experiences in one package. First, players embark on a platforming adventure with Bib, navigating jumps, switches, and doors on an interactive cardboard setup. Secondly, users can enjoy a golf game that utilizes the same cardboard elements to create obstacle courses. Lastly, an immersive coloring-in painting game allows doodling and projecting colors onto the cardboard in real-time.

While all components of Bib Goes Home are equally delightful, the platformer steals the show. Simple yet beautifully designed, this platformer brings pure joy from start to finish. Watching a hero made of colored lights jump around on physical cardboard, illuminated by the projector, creates a magical experience. By integrating an Arduino chip and a small activation switch, the developers managed to create a unique gaming experience. They even aim to mass-produce Bib in the future, allowing more people to enjoy this enchanting adventure.

Lost On Mars: The Ultimate Brute Machine

On the other end of the spectrum, Lost On Mars offers an intense gaming experience. This game comes with a complex array of knobs, slider switches, buttons, and even a built-in keyboard. Accompanying folders, maps, and other documentation add to the immersive atmosphere as players delve into the mystery of a lost expedition crew. Although the show floor setting made it challenging to fully grasp the game’s mechanics, experimenting with the rover’s joystick controls provided a glimpse of its coolness.

The rover’s control panel includes a speed slider, a brake switch, and various buttons to switch between camera and rover views. Through the camera view, players can capture more detailed pictures of their surroundings, enhancing the overall experience. While time constraints prevented a thorough exploration of Lost On Mars, developer Trey Ramm estimates that finding all crew members would take around 90 minutes. Unfortunately, this was more time than available, but Ramm’s gameplay video offers a glimpse into the game’s cleverness and functionality.
