Peter Molyneux’s blockchain game set to release next month, coinciding with the possibly diminished value of NFTs

The release of Peter Molyneux’s blockchain-connected business sim, Legacy, is just around the corner

In case you forgot – be that willingly or otherwise – Peter Molyneux has been working on a blockchain-connected business sim for the last few years. Well, it’s out next month, just in time to sink the final nail into the coffin of worthless NFTs.

Legacy was teased by the veteran developer’s studio 22cans back in 2017, before making a fuller reveal in late 2021. That reveal accompanied the sale of so-called “Land NFTs” for real-life money, or rather cryptocurrency. The game’s own Ethereum-based LegacyCoin, built with the help of web3 company-turned-game publisher Gala Games, was used for these transactions.

During the peak of the NFT craze, Legacy managed to attract over £40 million in actual, real money from buyers willing to spend big on virtual plots of land. The most expensive plot sold for £670,000 in crypto and was a limited-edition one-of-one London plot.

After almost two years, Legacy is finally set to release on PC and Mac on October 26th. According to Gala Games, the launch of Legacy is more than just a game release, it is the start of a journey where creativity, strategy, and business innovation come together.

The buying and selling of digital items stored on GalaChain blockchain and “legacy deed keys,” owned by those who bought plots, will provide additional revenue streams for the game. These keys allow land-owning players to grant rewards to “partners” (free-to-play players).

Legacy’s release comes at a time when the majority of NFTs are reportedly worthless. A recent report revealed that more than 95% of over 73,000 blockchain-based collections have no value. Additionally, the creation of these NFTs has resulted in a significant environmental impact, with the energy used equaling the yearly energy usage of thousands of homes or thousands of car trips from London to New Zealand.

Despite the controversies surrounding NFTs, Legacy is ready to make its mark in the gaming industry next month.
