Preview: Detective Pikachu Makes a Comeback – Unveiling Another Case to Solve

Detective Pikachu Returns: An Exciting Adventure in the Pokémon Universe

Detective Pikachu is a phenomenon in the video game industry that thrives in a rare space. Originally starting as a 2018 3DS title, it has now become synonymous with the 2019 live-action film starring Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds. With the announcement of a follow-up game just before the release of the film, fans have been eagerly awaiting the long-awaited sequel, Detective Pikachu Returns.

    Origins of Detective Pikachu

The concept for Detective Pikachu came about when developer Creatures noticed a gap in the Pokémon series – the lack of an adventure game. According to senior creative director Yasunori Yanagisawa, they saw this as an opportunity to explore the adventure genre, which was a perfect fit for a setting where Pokémon and humans coexist. The game provided a platform to delve into the world of Pokémon and create captivating cutscenes that gave players the freedom to explore.

    An Inspired Follow-Up

Interestingly, the existence of Detective Pikachu Returns may be owed to the success of the film adaptation. Creatures had the opportunity to observe the filming process and were inspired by it. Even in London Heathrow Airport, the team decided to develop a story for the game, aiming to achieve a similar level of storytelling as the film.

    A Glimpse into the Gameplay

During my gameplay demo of Detective Pikachu Returns, I had the chance to experience Chapter 1 of the game. The story revolves around protagonist Tim Goodman and Pikachu investigating a jewel theft in Ryme City. Following two leads involving Ducklett and Pawniard, we choose to pursue the Pawniard lead first, leading us to a terrace in one of the city’s parks.

On the terrace, we examine the crime scene’s window, hoping to find clues related to Pawniard. After discovering cut leaves, loose Whimsicott cotton, and finally a rock with blade marks, we decide to lure Pawniard out. Pikachu climbs on top of the rock, and the blade-handed Pokémon makes an appearance.

The Allure of the Pokémon Personalities

One of the highlights of Detective Pikachu Returns is the opportunity to interact with the various Pokémon in Ryme City. Since Tim can only understand Detective Pikachu, the conversations with other Pokémon have to be translated by Pikachu. According to Yanagisawa, Detective Pikachu has a middle-aged man’s character, and the team wanted to explore the interesting dynamics that emerge when a middle-aged man converses with Pokémon. The cutscenes focus on showcasing the unique personalities of each Pokémon, allowing them to shine.

Following Leads and Completing Side Quests

As the investigation progresses, we follow the lead on Ducklett, returning to the mansion where the theft occurred. Along the way, we encounter side quests known as Local Concerns, which reward players with additional lore and story about Ryme City. These quests involve tasks like finding a Pokémon with a long tongue or helping a child find a Pokémon playmate for soccer.

At the mansion, we encounter three Pokémon with special abilities that can assist in the investigation. Ultimately, we choose Growlithe with its exceptional sense of smell. The game introduces a new feature where Tim and Pikachu can split up, with Pikachu riding on the back of Growlithe. This offers unique gameplay sequences and adds depth to the gameplay experience.

    An Expanding Arsenal of Abilities

Detective Pikachu Returns introduces new sequences and abilities for players to explore. For example, Darmanitan has a strong punching ability that can open up areas previously inaccessible. These new abilities enhance the gameplay and provide exciting opportunities for players to navigate through challenges.

    An Exciting Cliffhanger

During my demo, I follow the trail of Ducklett’s scent and discover the Pokémon hiding in the bushes. After interrogating Ducklett, new details emerge, leading to a new lead involving a Cramorant. Unfortunately, my demo ends before I can follow up on this exciting revelation.

    A Promising Adventure Awaits

My time playing Detective Pikachu Returns was brief, but it left me wanting more. The interactions with the Pokémon, the intriguing storyline, and the dynamic gameplay sequences make this game a promising addition to the Pokémon universe. As the release date for Detective Pikachu Returns on the Nintendo Switch approaches on October 6, I eagerly anticipate diving into new cases and unraveling the mysteries of Ryme City.
