Riot Replaces LoL Summoner Names Due to Lack of “Lore Synchronization”

League of Legends Players Beware: Riot Games Axes Summoner Names in Favor of Riot IDs

League of Legends continues to dominate the PC gaming scene, attracting a massive community and receiving frequent updates and new content from its developer, Riot Games. However, amidst all the exciting news and announcements, one recent revelation has left many longtime fans heartbroken. Riot Games has made the decision to replace players’ unique Summoner Names with a new system called Riot IDs, which has sparked mixed emotions among the community.

Riot IDs: Creating a Unified Gaming Experience

The motivation behind this change, according to Riot Games, is to offer players a more unified experience across all their games. The developer acknowledges that while some fans may feel uncertain about these changes, its goal is to ensure a seamless transition and make players feel as connected to their Riot ID as they did to their Summoner Name.

The Beginning of the End for Summoner Names

The rollout of these changes is set to commence on Wednesday, November 20. Until then, players have a little more time to savor and cherish their beloved Summoner Names. Riot Games explains that this shift is rooted in the lore of Runeterra, the fictional world in which League of Legends takes place. Over time, the focus has shifted from the all-powerful summoners to the champions themselves. While the term ‘summoner’ still persists in some voice lines and in-game elements, Riot Games argues that it no longer aligns with the lore and desires to better reflect the current world of League of Legends through the new naming system.

    A Seamless Transition for Players

Fortunately, players do not need to take any action themselves during this transition. If you have played any of Riot Games’ other titles, you will already have a ready-made Riot ID. Once the system is in place, every player will receive one free name change per year. Should players wish to change their names more frequently, a fee will be attached, mirroring the current Summoner Name system.
