Valve Introduces the Upgraded Steam Deck OLED with Enhanced Screen and Extended Battery Life

The Steam Deck OLED: A Game-Changer in Handheld Gaming

Valve has once again surprised gamers with a new hardware announcement: the Steam Deck OLED. This refreshed version of the existing Steam Deck handheld PC boasts several significant improvements, including a brighter and more vibrant OLED display, enhanced battery life, and a more efficient AMD APU. The release date for the Steam Deck OLED is just around the corner, set for November 16th.

A Stunning Display and Improved Battery Life

In a review of the Steam Deck OLED, it is evident that this device is truly impressive. The OLED display offers a fabulous visual experience, especially when HDR support is enabled. Not only does the new display enhance the visuals, but it also improves the battery life. Game-specific battery life tests have shown that the Steam Deck OLED can potentially last for hours longer than its predecessor. Additionally, the thumbsticks have been designed for better grip, and with the more efficient APU, the system runs cooler and quieter.

    Pricing and Models

Pricing for the new Steam Deck models is straightforward. The 512GB version is priced at £479 / $549, and for the first time, a 1TB version is available at £569 / $649. Additionally, US and Canada residents can opt for the $679 Steam Deck OLED Special Edition, which features translucent bodywork and orange accents.

    Value and New Lineup

Compared to previous Steam Deck prices, the 512GB and standard 1TB OLED models offer even better value. The previous 512GB Deck was also priced at £569 / $649, but the OLED variant no longer includes the anti-glare screen treatment, which both 1TB models have. However, it’s essential to note that Valve is dropping prices on the non-OLED Decks and discontinuing the 64GB and 512GB models. As a result, the original 256GB Deck becomes the new budget option, although the 64GB and 512GB models will still be available until stock runs out. Valve confirms that these models will continue to receive software updates in the future.

    The Steam Deck Lineup

    • 64GB – £309 / $349 (while stocks last)
    • 256GB – £349 / $399
    • 512GB – £389 / $449 (while stocks last)
    • OLED 512GB – £479 / $549
    • OLED 1TB – £569 / $649
    • OLED 1TB Special Edition – $679

    Bundled Carrying Case

The 1TB versions of the Steam Deck OLED come with a new carrying case, providing an outer shell and a more compact secondary case for added protection in smaller bags. Unfortunately, the 512GB OLED model does not include this accessory.

    Additional Upgrades

All OLED variants come with a range of upgrades. The OLED screen offers a brightness rating of up to 1000cd/m2, giving excellent visual quality. The refresh rate has also increased from 60Hz to 90Hz, resulting in smoother performance for games that exceed 60fps. The APU has been optimized for efficiency, leading to improved battery life and some minor framerate improvements.

    A Highly Recommended Device

The Steam Deck OLED is undoubtedly a game-changer for handheld gaming. By addressing the primary shortcomings of the original Steam Deck – display and battery life – Valve has created an even better gaming experience. The prices have remained unchanged, making the Steam Deck OLED an attractive option for gamers seeking an immersive gaming experience on the go.
